...because I don't see how high boost by itself can destroy a rod bearing UNLESS the boost was causing the motor to detonate. Is that what you mean? High boost led to detonation, which beat the rod bearing to pieces? If that's the case, then the solution is to prevent detonation, rather than just run low boost. Under the right circumstances you could detonate at 17psi also (advanced timing, poor fuel, wrong plugs, high engine temp, combo of any of these).
